Celebrating Failure

Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class, or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.
I have failed on keeping up with watching the lectures on time. I for some reason was good at scheduling out my other classes’ assignments and even the assignments in this class. However, I for some reason wouldn’t/couldn’t find the time to watch the lectures at a time that was convenient. By the time I did watch the lectures, it would literally be maybe a few hours before the cupcake was due. Because of this, I had to skip around or speed up the lectures. In result, my grades in cupcakes started to go down as the semester went on.

Tell us what you learned from it.
I learned that I need to put everything on a calendar, not just some assignments. Even when I think I’ll make time to watch the lecture, it doesn’t happen because it’s not a part of my written to do list / calendar. From now on, I will make sure I will stay accountable for every single assignment / reading / lecture, etc.

Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure. Failure is hard, isn't it? It's embarrassing, sure, but it also means that we have to change something about ourselves. Talk about how you handle failure (emotionally, behaviorally). Finally, talk about how this class has changed your perspective on failure -- are you more likely to take a risk now than you were just a few months ago?
When I fail, I beat myself up. I am way too hard on myself. I had a slight “setback” on Sunday and Monday, and I wouldn’t get out of bed for two days because of it. I was miserable and depressed, and I hated myself for what I did.

However, just because I made a mistake, it doesn’t mean I give up. I know that I need to always try again. Every day the sun comes up, the world moves on. I need to keep it moving, and learn to reflect, and make better choices.

  1. Hi Kim,
Great blog post. I have found that making time for watching lectures can be troublesome, and since it is such an important part of the class, it is essential to do. The quizzes can be on anything throughout the 4 hours of content, so meticulous notes are a must. Your use of calendars is something I agree with wholeheartedly. Using organizational tools to the maximum extent is a great way to keep life on track.

  2. Hey Kim! I really enjoyed reading your celebrating failure blog post. This kind of got me in my feelings haha because I relate to this post a lot. Even with the lectures! I always tell myself I'm going to watch lectures for other classes and all but I never do it and it really effects my studying and learning abilities. I beat myself up for it right when I don't do well in something and I knew it was because I didn't watch my lecture. I realized I need to start writing it down and to actually start watching no matter how bored or tired I get it because its important for my grade and for me to learn a lot.

  3. Hey Kim, I had a similar experience very early in the semester. I didn't watch the first few lectures and I went in thinking I'd still be able to do somewhat well on Cupcake 1. Boy was I wrong. I got a .2/1 and my grade immediately took a hit. I learned my lesson though and soon started watching every lecture which has lead to higher cupcake grades for me
