Identifying Local Opportunities

1 st story: Title of article: Their community swimming pools got filled with dirt. West Tampa and Seminole Heights want them back. Link to article: https://www.tampabay.com/hillsborough/their-community-swimming-pools-got-filled-with-dirt-west-tampa-and-seminole-heights-want-them-back-20190530/ Summary: Tampa’s councilman Guido Maniscalco wants to restore some of Tampa’s’ closed pools so that families who don’t have enough money to become members of swim clubs or who do not have swimming pools of their own have a place to relax and dive into the water. The city closed neighborhood pools with dirt back in 2007. Reopening these closed pools are the current and future goals of the newly re-elected councilman.   What’s the problem presented in the story: The problem is that there are no community pools in neighborhoods that 91% of households say they don’t have a pool. The pools have been filled with dirt and have added dog parks where there are already enough d...

Forming An Opportunity Belief

Image
1) Your beginning point. Do you have a belief, supposition, or feeling that an opportunity exists? This belief may have come from your completion of prior exercises. Only select one belief. I live in Clearwater, Florida, and I have a belief there is an opportunity that exists right here locally. I currently work at a media and marketing company. While trying to find a space for the media and marketing company, I found a large 4000 sq. ft. building. 2) Describe your belief. Be sure to include a few things. First, what is the unmet need? Second, who has the need? Third, where did the need come from (is it new, or has it always existed)? Four, what are people doing to meet this need now? (These four elements are important -- we'll come back to these.) At this point, how sure are you (say, in percent terms) that this opportunity exists? While searching for this space for the media marketing company, I wanted to discover a way to decrease the rent as well as increase...

My Entrepreneurship Story

Image
I don’t think I personally have had a entrepreneurship experience with just myself yet. However, a close friend of mine back in high school was an entrepreneur. He was a member of the high school’s entrepreneur club. It was inspiring to witness what he came up with and achieved on his own. He always said he got the same gift from his family for the last fifteen years. He said it was nutcrackers and that he never even liked nutcrackers. He wanted to solve this problem somehow. In our senior year of high school, he got an opportunity. He pitched the idea at a competition in New York. The rough draft idea he had was to make an app that integrates Facebook and Amazon to help users find gifts that they actually like. He didn’t win the competition but he placed in the top 20. A month later, he got a call from an investor that was interested in his plan. He always said he never even had an actual product yet. He said it was his passion, eagerness and his rough plan that made it all happ...

Bug List

Image
1.        I am constantly getting emails from companies, such as MoveOn.org, even after I unsubscribe to their list multiple times. a.        Why? Sometimes those unsubscribe buttons turn out to be phishing attacks. By clicking on those links, it can confirm that your email is active so you may get more emails from now on. 2.        Every time I go to the Wells Fargo bank that has two drive-thru ATM machines, there are people waiting in line to see which car moves first. But then there’s other people who just pick a lane, not waiting for the next line to open. People start getting mad at each other accusing one another of cutting/butting/getting in front of the other person in line, not waiting their turn. a.        Why? There’s no signs or prompts to let people know if they should pick a lane or just form one line to wait until the next line opens. 3. ...

My first post.

Hi, class! My name is Kimberly Palo. I’m 30 years old, and I’m a Senior at the University of Florida. I graduate with my BS in telecommunication this upcoming Spring 2020. I currently live in the Tampa Bay area. I have a loving and supportive husband, and we have 2 daughters: a 7-month-old and a 2-year-old.  I recently got accepted into the combined degree program here at UF. I am taking three graduate classes this current Summer semester to get a head start. However, I am waiting to find out if I’ve been accepted or not into the UF master’s program for Social Media. I take the GRE again tomorrow to hopefully improve my score from the last time I took it. My current goal in my undergraduate studies is just to finish off the remaining semesters strong.  Looking forward to learning with everyone.
